About Us

The Stony Plain Public Library started as a project of the United Church young People's Club. It first opened in January of 1945 on 50th Street with 500 books on the shelves.Over the years, it has been in a variety of locations; the hotel dining room, the Town Hall above the Fire Hall, the Community Centre, the former Recreation Office on 51st Avenue, in Forest Green Plaza on 52nd Ave, and ultimately in the present location 5216 50 St. The Stony Plain Women's Institute sponsored the library when it came under the Provincial Library Act in 1948.The Library TodayWe now have a collection of over 43,000 items that includes over 4300 DVDs, 1300 CDs, 1000 audio-books, 1000 large print books and 94 magazine and newspaper subscriptions. Over 200,000 items circulate each year, and over 100,000 people visit the library.As a member of the Yellowhead Regional Library System and The Alberta Library, we have access to the holdings of over 300 libraries in Alberta and electronic resources including downloadable audiobooks and ebooks.
1945 the united church young peoples club opens the lirbary in an empty office on mainstreet. 1945-1947 the library moves to hotel dining room then above the fire hall. the first board is formed. 1948 Stony Plain Women's Institute incorporates the lirbary under the provincial library act. 1950 moved into the newly built community centre. 1989 moved into forest green plaza. 2003 major expansion into two new bays. 2005-2006 mini expansion into one bay creating our first meeting room and teen zone. 2010 mini expansion into one new bay. 2021 Moved into our current location at 5216 50st
