Edmonton Public Library Strike

Mar. 13, 2024

Staff of Edmonton Public Library (EPL), a neighbouring library system, will be part of the Civic Service Union (CSU) 52 strike as of March 14. For updates about this evolving situation, please check EPL's website

Here’s some information about what this means for patrons of Stony Plain Public Library (SPPL).

Staffing and Services

Stony Plain Public Library is a separate library system to Edmonton, so the strike does not directly affect our staff or most of our services. Delivery of materials between TRAC libraries will continue.

Library cardholders can continue to place holds on library items as usual.

To ensure that returned items are removed from your library account as quickly as possible, please return TRAC materials to any TRAC librarynot to one of the EPL branches.

This includes dropping items off with us, Spruce Grove Public Library, and Parkland County Libraries.

EPL asks that if you have any of their items, please hold onto it until after they are able to reopen.

ME Libraries

During the strike, SPPL patrons with access to EPL materials through the ME Libraries service will not have access to EPL materials.

EPL patrons* can borrow physical items from Stony Plain Public Library and many other participating libraries for free by registering their own cards with the ME Libraries service

*Only patrons over age 18 can register online with ME Libraries, using a card that’s in good standing. For patrons under the age of 18, please visit us in person with a parent or guardian. Please note that ME Libraries service provides access to physical items only – not to eBooks or other electronic content because of licensing restrictions.

Interlibrary Loans

Interlibrary loan service will continue but EPL titles will not be available for borrowing.

SPPL programs are continuing as usual, and a library card is not required to register or attend.
